Unique has been developed in conjunction with Anointed Productions, bfm (Black Filmmaker) and the Rix Centre to give a platform for the creative expression of BME practitioners with learning disabilities via media and the internet.
Anointed Productions
Anointed Productions plans to continue to run multimedia projects for marginalised groups. Through the backing and support of agencies such as the GLE, Prince's Trust and CIDA we have been able to start our social enterprise and our goal is to set up other people for success.
For BME learners with disabilities we have created Unique because the users are unique as individuals and unique in what they can do. We aim to pilot this programme across East London where we are based and then take it pan London and eventually into the regions because there is a definite chasm not just a gap in this area.
Bfm
bfm is a multimedia company with more than eight years' experience in the international black filmmaker market. In addition to publishing a high quality bi-monthly magazine, bfm organises an International Festival in London supported by the BBC and ITV, runs a Film Club and hosts a dedicated website (www.bfmmedia.com).
bfm is involved with the production of commercial feature films, driven by the growing need for films that reflect the cultural needs of the black British market. The success of Bend It Like Beckham has highlighted that British audiences generally want to see more diverse cinema. Films that reflect this experience are increasingly finding a market not only amongst black people but also across the wider community nationally as well as internationally.
Rix Centre
The Rix Centre is an innovative new charity improving the lives of people with learning disabilities through the use of new media technologies. It began life as a multimedia research department at the University of East London. The Rix Centre @ UEL combines multimedia production and evaluation expertise with a wide understanding of the learning disability field.
Additionally, the charity works with organisations across commercial, voluntary and educational sectors forging partnerships and pooling knowledge and experience. The Rix Centre has a unique mission that combines academic excellence with both social and business goals. Its products and services will ensure that the learning disability community get the best from the unique set of opportunities proposed by new technologies.
